Taking time out with Total Body Concept this winter (plus a giveaway!)

If you’re anything like me, self-care and setting aside time for yourself has fallen to the bottom of your never-ending to-do list. We’re over halfway through 2020 and I’ve been meaning to book myself in for a facial since January…

    My Skincare History
I booked in for my first treatment at Total Body Concept in 2015, shortly after moving to Christchurch from Toronto. My skin was out of whack; struggling to adjust to the different climate (going from autumn to spring is confusing on many levels). My stress levels were higher than normal as I navigated a new city and looked for a job. After my initial consultation, I had my first ever mandelic acid peel and the results were transformative. I adopted a more consistent skincare regime and invested in a few serums, I’m a fan of the Ultraceuticals Ultra Clear Treatment Lotion. Pre-wedding, I kicked my skincare routine up a notch, returning for regular treatments to get my skin glowing on the day. It’s funny how we need a major life event to justify spending money on ourselves.

While I developed a slight skincare obsession during lockdown (surely I’m not alone here…) I can’t remember the last time I had a facial. With our return to Canada, I decided to sneak in one last treatment at Total Body Concept before our flight. There’s nothing like a preflight facial to get your skin in tip top shape.

    Skin Consultation
My visit started with a skin consultation, where the team analysed my skin and specific problem areas so they can recommend the best course of action. I’ve had a handful of skin consultations in the past, but our skin can change with the seasons, stress, hormones, etc. so regular check-ins are a good idea. Debbie and the team then recommended I try their new Laser Genesis treatment followed by a luxurious hyaluronic facial with the incredible Annie.

    Cutera Laser Genesis ($200)
Often referred to as the Hollywood Facial because celebrities swear by it, Cutera Laser Genesis is a highly effective, non-invasive skin treatment that diminishes acne scars and builds collagen. Basically, it stimulates the skin’s natural processes by remodelling collagen to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture. In addition to treating conditions associated with ageing and sun damage, it’s great for targeting blemishes and uneven skin tones (two of my biggest concerns). Using a laser light to target the layer of skin where collagen is produced, small areas of the skin are heated to 41-44 degrees to stimulate new collagen formation. It felt like I was lying on a beach in Fiji, such a nice escape from Christchurch’s dreary weather.

Hyaluronic Smooth & Fill Facial ($195)
Next I had the Hyaluronic Smooth & Fill Facial, which is another anti-ageing and blissful hour-long treatment. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our bodies, but depletes as we get older. Our joints, skin and cells all benefit from its hydrating effects and it’s equally good at healing our skin after laser treatments or peels.

Immediately after the treatments, my skin looked plump and glowing. I was also so relaxed that I fell asleep during the hyaluronic facial and hand massage. The next day, I woke up and my skin looked even healthier. This treatment is perfect the day before an important event or celebration. It’s one I would’ve loved to have before getting married.

  • A Weekend Getaway To Isolation Bay

A Weekend Getaway To Isolation Bay

If you’re wanting to experience winter in New Zealand, you’ll have to go further south than Christchurch. Accustomed to full-scale, snow-globe, frostbitten winters back home, it’s almost a relief to see the snow-capped Southern Alps, even from a distance.

So, when an invite to stay at Isolation Bay came through, you’d better believe this Canadian was excited! I had heard about this gorgeous, lakefront retreat with its panoramic views and high ceilings, and was hoping to eventually make it down to Tekapo for a weekend getaway.

Located on the Western shore of Lake Tekapo, Isolation Bay lives up to its name. It’s a perfectly secluded and remote escape for families and friends alike. The space exudes laidback luxury with a roaring fire, gorgeous leather couches, and a large open kitchen. There are five bedrooms, which is ideal whether your group of friends is in need of a long weekend away or you’re planning a family gathering. The space fits up to 16 people, which is quite rare when you consider the location and unobstructed views! I’m actually a bit disappointed I didn’t book a stay there when I was travelling to Queenstown with my family after our wedding in March.

The house is sun-filled and glorious. Slide open the doors and you’ll have immediate access to the vistas of Lake Tekapo and the snow-capped Southern Alps. It’s truly a sight for sore eyes year-round, but extra magical in the winter. There’s plenty of outdoor seating for sunny afternoons; we enjoyed a platter at the picnic table and s’mores by the outdoor fire.

There’s plenty to explore in Tekapo itself. We embarked on a Lake Tekapo Farm Tour that proved to be equal parts fun and informative. You’ll be taken to breathtaking locations, meet and feed farm animals (sheep, alpacas, horses, oh my!) and learn about the history of the Mackenzie region. Without giving too much away, there’s plenty of off-roading and even a jaunt up the side of Mount John Observatory. There was even some cattle calling thanks to Bayley.

After the tour, we stopped into newly opened Our Dog Friday for burgers and drinks (order a hot toddy and thank me later). The restaurant is perfectly situated at the edge of the lake and the menu is super tasty. We tried everything from the gourmet beef and chicken burgers to the loaded fries. You’ll want to hit up this spot if you’ve in need of a mean feed.

After two relaxing nights at Isolation Bay, we packed up our bags and headed back to reality. While I’m physically back in Christchurch, I definitely left my heart in Tekapo. I’ll be reminiscing about the great memories made on this serene, secluded escape for months to come.

Thanks for having us, Isolation Bay and thanks for the photos, Mooch Style

  • How I’m Embracing Winter This Year

How I’m Embracing Winter This Year

Apparently Christchurch has only seen thirteen hours of sun in the past nineteen days… This seems pretty extreme for a typically sunny and relatively temperate city, but then again, who am I to complain? I’m about to escape to North America for the next two weeks. But let’s backtrack… this post isn’t about escaping winter, it’s about making the most of the season even when the weather is less than ideal. Here are some ways I’ve resisted hibernating until the cherry blossoms decide to bloom in Hagley Park…

Make the most of ski season
I was pretty surprised when I first moved to New Zealand and learnt how popular skiing is here. Arriving from Canada, I knew that a few Kiwis skied, but had no idea the extent of the options available even within Canterbury. A weekend or even a day away to Mt. Hutt or Porters is the perfect way to immerse yourself into the season.

Enjoy a mulled wine or two
Mulled wine is the perfect excuse to peel yourself off the couch. Smash Palace is my go-to for a steaming glass of the cinnamon and nutmeg beverage. Even on cooler evenings, I can sit outside (beside a heater) with my mulled wine and almost forget the temperature is hovering slightly above zero. If you can’t bear tearing yourself away from your latest Netflix binge, it’s also ridiculously easy to make at home.

    Holiday in Hanmer Springs
It wasn’t until last winter that I properly explored Hanmer. Nick and I spent the night at Braemar Lodge for his birthday and had the loveliest time. Known for its hot pools and walking tracks, the alpine town is close enough to the ski fields, offering an alternative après-ski option. Stop in at the 1861 Hurunui Hotel on the drive back for lunch or a coffee.

    Treat yourself to a staycation
If you can’t get away to the Pacific Islands or Hawaii, a staycation might just do the trick. There are so many staycation options in Christchurch, but two of my hotels are the Crowne Plaza and Hotel Montreal (read my staycation guide here). Both strike the perfect balance between luxury and anonymity (which is ideal for a staycation) and you’ll love their in-house dining options if you don’t feel like venturing outside.

If you’d like to venture slightly outside Christchurch, I love exploring the North Canterbury region and highly recommend Pure Pods. Perfectly situated for gorgeous views and isolation, staying at the Waipara pod offers the ultimate mini getaway.

Book yourself a massage or a facial
Winter takes a toll on the body, so it’s important to treat yourself every now and then. Whether it’s a hydrating facial at Total Body Concept or a luxurious massage at Beauty at the Tannery, you’ll leave feeling so much better than when you arrived. If the funds are a bit tight, you can always treat yourself to a face mask and your favourite book.

    Check out a new restaurant
While picnics are out of the question, visiting your favourite restaurant or venturing somewhere new is an excellent way to beat the cold. Cosy up by the fire at Miro in the Midland Building, share a platter at O.G.B. or grab a cocktail at Universo in the art gallery. The central city options are so extensive and it’s nice to get out of the house even when the weather is a bit frightening.

    Invest in some new sweaters
My friend once commented that Canadians must really love turtlenecks after she noticed me wearing them pretty much every day. I’m not sure if that’s true, but Canadians are quite practical when it comes to winter dressing. We’re accustomed to shockingly cold temperatures, so we prefer not to mess around. If you’re feeling the chill, there’s really nothing better than snuggling up in your favourite cosy jumper.

    Sweat it out
Winter is when many of us get into a bit of a workout funk, but it’s actually the best way to keep warm and ward off illness. So, this year I decided to switch it up a bit by signing up for spin classes. Rather than traditional classes, I opted for Cadence Cycle Studio which combines strength training, cardio and cycling. It’s the perfect workout for those of us who need a bit of variety.

    Experiment with new recipes
I’m not much of a chef, but winter is the time when I don’t mind experimenting in the kitchen. The days are shorter and the nights can feel long. There’s something so special about preparing a wholesome meal to share with friends and loved ones.

    …or order some meatballs!
Meatball Monday is, hands down, the best way to beat your weekday blues. You get the choice of pork and beef balls or white bean and cannellini (vegan is also an option!). You can also add anchovies, which are simply delicious. Even better, Tom delivers to homes and businesses in the central city and nearby suburbs. Oh and he’s recently introduced fennel to his recipes, which is a game changer. Just trust me and order some balls for next Monday.

I’d love to hear your ideas for embracing the chillier months. Leave me a comment below with your tips.

  • A Whimsical Winter Wonderland

    A Whimsical Winter Wonderland

It’s no secret that I have a crush on Desmond & Beatrice.

So, you can imagine my excitement upon receiving an invite to their holiday soirée! Previewing their delicious winter menu along with a hot cocoa bar, the evening was simply magical!

It was my first time visiting 2nd Floor Events even though Nyeus Inc. (where I work) designed and developed their website.  I was blown away by the beautiful space, and Desmond & Beatrice did an outstanding job of adding their own whimsical touches. We were treated to decadent seasonal treats; gingerbread cookies, s’more bars, red velvet cupcakes, oh my! There was even a photo booth with gorgeous crowns made by Lady Hayes and stunning tassel backdrop created by Studio Mucci! Nail and beauty zones were especially appreciated, where bloggers had their nails embellished by Nail Kandy and makeup touched up by Karen of Enamorado Syndrome.

Speaking of the treats: run, don’t walk! These snowflake gingerbread cookies are TO DIE FOR. Luckily, there was an abundance of delicious treats, and Amanda generously suggested we take a few home with us to devour throughout the week. I’m chomping on one as we speak! Nom!

It was the perfect girls night out, and I met so many writers, bloggers, and local business owners I admire.

I’m sure you’ve read Alyssa’s blog, Random Acts of Pastel. If not, you’re seriously missing out. Also, take a look at Brianne Burnell‘s website, her illustrations and zines are out of this world cool.

Thanks for a fabulous evening I won’t soon forget, D&B!

  • Mont Tremblant

    Mont Tremblant

Mont Tremblant, the highest peak in the Laurentians, received its name from an Algonquin Indian legend in which the angry god Manitou gave the mountain a good shake whenever humans disturbed nature in any way.

I don’t see why anyone would ever tamper with Tremblant’s beautiful surroundings; from the crisp pine trees and piles of fresh powder, it’s the perfect city break.

If you’re tired of Toronto’s simultaneously slushy and bitter winter climate, an escape to Tremblant will reinvigorate your love for winter. It’s the snow globe we rarely experience in the Big Smoke. Winter in the city is frustrating and relentless, however, in the mountainous regions of Quebec, it’s breathtaking.

My family recently visited Mont Tremblant. After skiing the Rockies all my life, the Laurentian Mountains were a welcome treat! I’d highly recommend visiting, and partaking in both the skiing/snowboarding aspect, but also après ski (which is a post for another day!)

For more Tremblant photos, check out my Instagram!

Also, I have a surprise in store! Stay tuned! xo

  • Pura Vida

    Pura Vida

Having lived away from Canada’s brutally cold winters for a few years, I had almost forgotten the necessity (I use that term loosely) of escaping to a warmer climate. If only for a few days, a spot a sun can do wonders for your mental health. My family doesn’t usually head south during the winter months; my parents preferred tormenting us as youngsters, with ski trips to the Rockies in -30 degree weather. I’m kidding, of course, but wind chill is sometimes more painful than sunburn. This year, however, they won a trip through Honda, and my sisters and I tagged along because, well, family vacations need not end simply because you’ve reached adulthood.

I’m a little late on uploading these photos from my recent trip to Costa Rica. Better late than never, right?

If you can’t get away for a few days, here are some of my other solutions to combat the winter chills:

    1. Have a spa day

Come on, you deserve it! There are options abound for relaxing in Toronto. Or, if you’re pinching pennies, just grab a $2 face mask and paint your nails coral.

    2. Try a Bikram yoga class

Yoga’s the perfect way to focus your energy and challenge yourself. Add a lil’ bit of heat, and bam, it’s a workout! You’ll feel sweaty, rejuvenated, and ready to take on your day.

    3. Wrap yourself in a floor-length cardigan (ankle-length cardis are all the rage these days) and hit up your favourite café.

Extra points if they serve brunch and booze.

    4. Gratitude.

There are people who can’t afford heating or a warm bowl of soup. Let’s appreciate the fact that we have warm homes to return to every night.

    5. Enjoy the snow.

My Kiwi friend’s reaction to the snow in Saskatchewan was priceless, and made me appreciate Canadian winters if only for a second. Put on a toque and your thickest socks, and go sledding.

It’s now March, and I think we’re nearing the end of winter here in Toronto. Here’s hoping!

    xoxo, Vanessa
